What Does an Elder Do?


The Presbyterian Church, as a part of the body of Christ, is governed democratically.  At the congregation level, members elect elders as their representatives.  The governing body of the congregation is the Session.  The Session of Tustin Presbyterian Church is currently composed of ten ruling elders (members) and one teaching elder (pastor).


Elders, joined together as the Session, have the responsibility of governing the congregation and guiding its witness to the activity of God in the world, so that the congregation is and becomes a community of faith, hope, love, and witness.


Elders meet as a Session one evening per month.  Each elder is assigned to one or more committees that lead the congregation in the areas of worship, mission, stewardship, fellowship, outreach (new members), Christian education, communication, property upkeep, finance, endowment, personnel, and nominations.  Committees meet monthly, or as needed.


To qualify for consideration as an elder, a member should be a person of wisdom and maturity of faith, having demonstrated skills in leadership and being compassionate in spirit.  Typically, elders are elected for a three year term, though a shorter term may be considered.  A diversity of gifts is sought for the group of elders on the Session, in order to effectively fulfill the various areas of service.

Session Committees

Members of the congregation are invited to serve as members of most of the committees of Session.  The Committees are always open to new ideas and new members.  If you are interested in serving on a committee, please contact the moderator of that Committee.  Most committee meetings and the Session meetings are open to any member of the congregation who wishes to attend.  Meetings of the Nominating Committee are closed because of the confidential nature of their discussions.  Portions of the meetings of Personnel Committee and the Session itself may also be closed for reasons of confidentiality.

Session meets on the third Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Fireside Lounge. 


If you plan to attend a committee meeting, it is advisable to contact the moderator of the committee to be sure the meeting will be held as scheduled.



Session News


The following are the significant items from the most recent Session meetings:


July 2017:

  • Approved an overnight event in the Youth Lounge on July 29 for the youth and leadership for the youth mission trip.

  • Approved potential drivers for youth events.

  • Approved the scheduling of the 2017 Advent Celebration on Sunday, December 3, from 10:45 a.m. – 12:45 p.m.

  • Approved Patricia Stout as a member of the Finance Committee for the remainder of 2017.

  • Approved the expenditure of funds to re-roof the Fellowship Hall, Church Office, and Church Kitchen roofs and to perform preventative maintenance work on the Christian Education Building and Sanctuary roofs.

  • Approved the serving of communion at the men’s retreat on Sunday, September 10.

  • Elected Barbara Murphy as the third commissioner from TPC to the meeting of The Presbytery of Los Ranchos on September 28.

  • Approved an adult education presentation on Sunday, August 6, following the worship service, by the Rev. Dr. Kass Kassouni to discuss the memoir he has written about his life that will be published in the near future.

June 2017:

  • Approved the schedule and program for REMIX during the 2017/2018 school year.

  • Approved a special REMIX Trunk or Treat event on Monday, October 30.

  • Approved the schedule of dates and locations for the 2017 Summer Splash program for the youth.

  • Approved a Flamingo Flocking fundraising event to support the December youth mission trip to Costa Rica.

  • Approved a series of monthly adult education classes on current events and issues on Sunday mornings beginning in October with the classes to be led by the Rev. Dr. Kass Kassouni.

  • Approved adjustments in the work hours for the Director of Children’s Ministries and the Youth Director to better serve the participants in these areas of ministry.

  • Approved the expenditure of funds to replace the two outside doors between the Fellowship Hall and the church kitchen.

May 2017:

  • Approved a four-week adult education class entitled “Racism and Reconciliation” facilitated by Lori Ruff-Schmalenberger on the Sunday mornings from September 3 through September 24 at 11:00 a.m.

  • Approved the sponsorship by Tustin Presbyterian Church of a booth at the Tustin Tiller Days from October 6 through October 8.

  • Approved facility usage agreements with National University Academy and Discovery of Learning for the 2017/2018 school year.

  • Designated Sue Currie as the liaison from Tustin Presbyterian Church to Tustin Community Preschool, National University Academy, Discovery of Learning, and Boy Scout Troop 33 and Barbara Murphy as the mission representative to Tustin Community Preschool.

  • Approved the cancellation of the August stated Session meeting.

April 2017:

  • Received six new members from the Confirmation Class for the youth.

  • Approved the following activities for the youth: a bowling night at Concourse Bowling Center in Anaheim on April 26, a bonfire at Bolsa Chica State Park on June 16, and a visit to Six Flags Magic Mountain on August 10.

  • Approved the attendance of the youth at the Los Ranchos Presbytery Gathering at Community Presbyterian Church of La Mirada on May 25 and a follow-up youth event at St. Mark Presbyterian Church in Newport Beach on May 26.

  • Approved the 2017 Summer Splash program for the youth.

  • Approved the attendance of the high school youth at the Sierra Service Project on the Navajo reservation in Tsaile, AZ from July 30 – August 5.

  • Approved a project for the youth consisting of the preparation of “Birthday-in-a-Bag” kits for the Tustin Family and Youth Center and “Cancer Comfort” kits for Breastlink in Orange.

  • Approved the purchase of a new computer server for the church office.

  • Approved the facility usage agreement with Discovery of Learning for its summer 2017 program.

  • Approved the facility usage agreement with National University Academy for its continued use of TPC facilities during the 2017/2018 school year.

  • Designated Barbara Murphy as the liaison from TPC with Discovery of Learning and National University Academy.

March 2017:

  • Approved the Rev. Karen Claassen as the leader for the Women’s Retreat that will be held in the Fellowship Hall on a date to be determined in October 2017.

  • Approved the Men’s Retreat that will be held on September 9 and September 10 at the Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center next to Irvine Regional Park with Dr. Dale Brunner as the leader.

  • Approved hikes by the TPC Mountaineers on March 11, May 6, July 8, September 9, and November 11.

  • Approved a Women’s Evening Bible Study led by Martha Connely that will be held on the first Thursday evening of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Fireside Lounge using the 2016/2017 Horizons Bible Study “Who Is Jesus?”.

  • Approved a class for potential new members on April 23 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

  • Approved the expenditure of funds to advertise the Easter services at TPC in the Orange County Register and the Tustin News newspapers.

  • Approved expenditures for painting on the outside of the Sanctuary Building, around the church signboard, on the inside of the Fellowship Hall, and in the Fireside Lounge.

  • Approved the expenditure of funds for the purchase of three 4‑megapixel security cameras and an 8-channel digital recorder and monitor for the monitoring of the patio area and the church parking lot and door from the church office.

  • Approved the scheduling of two worship services on Easter Sunday, April 16, 2017, with the two services to be held at 9:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.

  • Approved Richard Loeble and Lori Ruff-Schmalenberger as ruling elder commissioners and the currently serving Session members as alternate ruling elder commissioners from Tustin Presbyterian Church to meetings of The Presbytery of Los Ranchos from April 1, 2017 through March 31, 2018.

  • Approved the continued use of the Growing in Grace and Gratitude curriculum from the PCUSA for 2017/2018 Sunday School in pre-kindergarten through fourth grade.

  • Approved the use of the We Believe curriculum for the 2017 Confirmation Class.

  • Approved a congregational Spring Dance, which would be planned and organized by the youth, in the Fellowship Hall on Sunday, April 30, from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

  • Approved Camp Ponderosa as the summer trip for the youth in middle school during the week of June 26.

  • Approved a youth mission project of crocheting octopi for premature babies.

February 2017:

  • Approved congregation-at-large members for several committees.

  • Approved the annual reports of the committees and organizations of Tustin Presbyterian Church for 2016.

  • Approved three activities for the TPC youth.

  • Approved the expenditure of funds to install a security alarm in the first floor of the Christian Education Building.

  • Approved revised fee schedules for weddings and memorial services at TPC.

January 2017:

  • Approved congregation-at-large members for several committees.

  • Approved the TPC budget for 2017.

  • Approved a TPC Antique Sale coordinated by Helen Boggs as part of the 2017 Tustin Home Tour.

  • Approved the 2016 TPC annual statistical report to the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).

  • Approved the observation of Boy Scout Sunday on February 12.

  • Approved the formation of a women’s evening Bible study group led by Martha Connely with the dates and times to be determined.

  • Approved the scheduling of the Men’s Retreat on September 9 and September 10 at the Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center with Dr. Frederick Dale Bruner as the leader.

  • Approved the participation of TPC in the 2017 Tustin Chili Cook-off.

  • Approved the end of the year basic mission payment to The Presbytery of Los Ranchos.

  • Approved the purchase of a new projector and screen and the installation of a new internet access point.

  • Approved the participation of the TPC Youth in the gathering of the youth of The Presbytery of Los Ranchos on Saturday, January 21, at St. Mark Presbyterian Church.

December 2016:

November 2016:

  • Received a new TPC member.

  • Approved the participation of the TPC youth in a gathering of the youth of The Presbytery of Los Ranchos at the Second Harvest Food Bank at the Great Park on December 17, followed by hosting the participants for lunch in the TPC Youth Lounge.

  • Approved an overnight New Year’s Eve Lock-in for the youth in the TPC Youth Lounge.

  • Authorized the Endowment Fund Committee to negotiate and enter into an agreement with Yosemite Capital Management for management of the endowment funds of Tustin Presbyterian Church.

  • Appointed Gary Boggs as the moderator and Gail Greek as the vice-moderator of the Personnel Committee for 2017

  • Approved the terms of call for the Rev. Dr. Steve Ranney as Pastor/Head of Staff for 2017 and recommended their approval by the congregation at the 2017 annual meeting.

  • Appointed Bill Groves and Chester Horton for terms on the Endowment Fund Committee beginning in 2017.

  • Approved the scheduling of a joint meeting of the Session and the Board of Deacons on December 19.

  • Approved the expenditure of funds for a complete updating of the Tustin Presbyterian Church website.

  • Received a report that there would be a flu shot clinic at TPC on Saturday, December 3, from 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

October 2016:

  • Approved the percentage that will be used to calculate the amount of Endowment Fund income that will be available for use during 2017.

  • Approved an orientation session for potential new TPC members on Sunday, November 13, at 11:00 a.m.

  • Approved the expenditure of funds to replace loose concrete blocks and caps on the church campus.

  • Approved Loren Webb as a REMIX volunteer with interaction with the participants.

  • Approved a Thanksgiving Dinner Scavenger Hunt in the Tustin area by the youth during the evening of Friday, November 18.

September 2016:

  • Called the fall meeting of the congregation for Sunday, October 23, immediately following the worship service, for the purpose of electing elders and deacons.

  • Approved the scheduling of a course entitled Exploring the Belhar Confession on four Sundays in October, from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., with the course to be facilitated by Lori Ruff-Schmalenberger based upon General Assembly Council study materials.

  • Approved Ryan Dunn as a Childcare Assistant.

  • Approved the scheduling of the 2016 Advent Celebration on Sunday, November 27, from 10:45 a.m. – 12:45 p.m.

  • Approved the hiring of Dr. Stephen Coker as Chancel Choir Director.

  • Approved the purchase of new liquid candles for the candelabras for the Sanctuary. 

August 2016:

  • Approved a Long-range Plan Report for Tustin Presbyterian Church.  (The report will be presented at a town hall meeting of the congregation on September 25)

  • Authorized the Endowment Committee to investigate possible changes in the managers and strategies for the investment of the endowment funds of Tustin Presbyterian Church in order to provide an improved performance for these funds.

  • Approved the expenditure of funds for a locksmith to re-key the locks on the entire church campus.
