What Does an Elder Do?

The Presbyterian Church, as a part of the body of Christ, is governed democratically.  At the congregation level, members elect elders as their representatives.  The governing body of the congregation is the Session.  The Session of Tustin Presbyterian Church is currently composed of ten ruling elders (members) and one teaching elder (pastor).

Elders, joined together as the Session, have the responsibility of governing the congregation and guiding its witness to the activity of God in the world, so that the congregation is and becomes a community of faith, hope, love, and witness.

Elders meet as a Session one evening per month.  Each elder is assigned to one or more committees that lead the congregation in the areas of worship, mission, stewardship, fellowship, outreach (new members), Christian education, communication, property upkeep, finance, endowment, personnel, and nominations.  Committees meet monthly, or as needed.

To qualify for consideration as an elder, a member should be a person of wisdom and maturity of faith, having demonstrated skills in leadership and being compassionate in spirit.  Typically, elders are elected for a three year term, though a shorter term may be considered.  A diversity of gifts is sought for the group of elders on the Session, in order to effectively fulfill the various areas of service.

If you would like to learn more about the role of elders at TPC, please let a member of the Nominating Committee know.

Session Committees

Members of the congregation are invited to serve as members of most of the committees of Session.  The Committees are always open to new ideas and new members.  If you are interested in serving on a committee, please contact the moderator of that Committee.  Most committee meetings and the Session meetings are open to any member of the congregation who wishes to attend.  Meetings of the Nominating Committee are closed because of the confidential nature of their discussions.  Portions of the meetings of Personnel Committee and the Session itself may also be closed for reasons of confidentiality.

Session meets on the third Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Fireside Lounge.

If you plan to attend a committee meeting, it is advisable to contact the moderator of the committee to be sure the meeting will be held as scheduled.
