Speaker: Dr. Carrie Miles
Carrie will discuss the historical and economic origins of the “traditional” family/gender division of labor/the subordination of women to men (patriarchy) and how it got all tangled up in Christianity. She’ll discuss the impact of the industrial revolution on the family and how the resulting changes led up to the great cultural divisions that we see today. Included in these cultural divisions is the huge number of schisms within Christianity that have developed over the past 70 years. An understanding of the issues will help us better minister to those dealing with these changes and extend grace to those whose views differ from our own. Additionally, it will help us better understand which traditions we should keep and which, by God’s grace, we can let go.
About our speaker: Carrie A. Miles is the co-founder and executive director of Empower International Ministries and the author of The Redemption of Love (Brazos Press, 2006) and several Bible study guides on the relationships between men and women. She holds a doctorate from the University of Chicago and is a senior scholar in residence at Chapman University and non-resident scholar at Baylor University in Texas. She enjoys singing in her church choir when she’s not conducting seminars with Empower International.
