Update – 5/24/2020

Dear TPC Family,

As we look forward to worship this week, I am reminded that one of the things that makes TPC such a wonderful place is the care and support we share with our family. Please continue to be in prayer for our Deacons and our youth as they are doing such a wonderful job of serving our congregation and community in Jesus’ name. This week is a look at an important choice we have to make.

This week, again, we have pre-recorded the service and put all of the parts together in a YouTube playlist that will allow you to enjoy the music and spoken word in the appropriate order. Here is the link: https://bit.ly/TPC_2020-05-24_Playlist. Click on the link at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 24, to join us in worship. There will be opportunities for you to sing along with hymns and, as always, join in the prayers as I lead us through this celebration of the risen Christ. A link to a PDF with the order of worship is available at https://bit.ly/TPC_2020-05-24_ServiceOrder. NOTE: Because the service is on YouTube, there may be advertisements that pop in, but you may skip them after a few seconds.)

COFFEE FELLOWSHIP:  This week, at 10:30 a.m., we will again be hosting a Zoom coffee time. The link to join is https://us02web.zoom.us/j/86172234939?pwd=aDJjaXZpQkJzQ0xkNHpINjVJUk5vdz09, or it can be found at the top of this page.

VIRTUAL POTLUCK (Please sign up by Monday, May 25):  Since we have been doing so many things in new ways, Emily and the youth have come up with a way for ten of us to share a meal. On May 30 they will host a virtual potluck. The way it will work is as follows:

  1. Sign-ups will be limited to 10 households (for our first time around): 3 main dishes, 5 sides, and 2 desserts. Please make enough for 15 households to get some.
  2. Everyone will drop off items at the church on Saturday, May 30, curbside at 10:00 a.m. (Youth can pick up from the homebound.)
  3. Youth will divide the food and wrap it in disposable packaging.
  4. Participants will come back to the church at 11:30 a.m. for food.
  5. The Zoom Lunch starts at 12 noon

If you are interested, please contact Emily at emily@tustinpresbyterian.org.

There are two ways to participate in the offering of our tithes and gifts. You can mail them to the church (225 W. Main St., Tustin, CA 92780) or you can go to the website and look for the green box at the bottom of the page that says “Give Now.” Thank you for all who are responding.

In these days as we look for encouragement, listen to these words from Ezekiel 37 describing how God brings life to impossible situations:

1The hand of the Lord came upon me, and he brought me out by the spirit of the Lord and set me down in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones. 2He led me all around them; there were very many lying in the valley, and they were very dry. 3He said to me, “Mortal, can these bones live?” I answered, “O Lord God, you know.” 4Then he said to me, “Prophesy to these bones, and say to them: O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. 5Thus says the Lord God to these bones: I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. 6I will lay sinews on you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live; and you shall know that I am the Lord.”

Update – 5/17/2020

Dear TPC Family,

As we look forward to worship this week, I am reminded that one of the things that makes TPC such a wonderful place is the care and support we share with our family. This week some of that family has suffered a loss. Martha Connely’s sister, Nan Pierce, passed away last night.  Please remember her and Nan’s extended family in your prayers. Since we recorded this week’s service on Thursday morning, this concern did not make it into the prayer time in the service. Please continue to be in prayer for our Deacons and our youth as they are doing such a wonderful job of serving our congregation and community in Jesus’ name. This week is a look at how big our God is and what that says to us in the midst of this time.

This week, again, we have pre-recorded the service and put all of the parts together in a YouTube playlist that will allow you to enjoy the music and spoken word in the appropriate order. Here is the link: https://bit.ly/TPC_2020-05-17_Playlist. Click on the link at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 17, to join us in worship. A link to a PDF with the order of worship is available at https://bit.ly/TPC_2020-05-17_ServiceOrder. NOTE: Because the service is on YouTube, there may be advertisements that pop in, but you may skip them after a few seconds.)

In these days as we look for encouragement listen to these words from Isaiah 40 describing how great God is:

10  See, the Lord God comes with might
and his arm rules for him
     his reward is with him,
        and his recompense before him.
11  He will feed his flock like a shepherd;
he will gather the lambs in his arms,
and carry them in his bosom,
and gently lead the mother sheep.
12  Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand
and marked off the heavens with a span,
enclosed the dust of the earth in a measure,
and weighed the mountains in scales
and the hills in a balance?
13   Who has directed the spirit of the Lord,
or as his counselor has instructed him?
14  Whom did he consult for his enlightenment,
and who taught him the path of justice?
     Who taught him knowledge,
and showed him the way of understanding?
15  Even the nations are like a drop from a bucket,
        and are accounted as dust on the scales;
see, he takes up the isles like fine dust.

Update – 5/10/2020

Dear TPC Family,

I want to wish all of you a very happy Mother’s Day. I hope you will join me as I take time to thank God for my mother and all of the people in my life that filled that role for me.

This week, there has been continued conversation about bringing our “exile” to an end. While that day is still a little ways off, we have begun to make plans for how we will meet again. I continue to be encouraged by the love and care that exudes from our congregation. I hear the reports of the work that our Deacons and our youth are doing, and to see God provide what we need to do the work we are called to do leaves me with a deep sense of gratitude and awe. This week we will continue to answer the “So What?” question of Easter and ask what difference it will make in our relationship with God.

This week again we have pre-recorded the service and put all of the parts together in a YouTube playlist that will allow you to enjoy the music and spoken word in the appropriate order. In these days as we look for encouragement, listen to these words from Philippians.

“Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus,
who, though he was in the form of God,
did not regard equality with God
       as something to be exploited,
but emptied himself,
taking the form of a slave,
       being born in human likeness.
And being found in human form,
8       he humbled himself
and became obedient to the point of death—
      even death on a cross.
Therefore God also highly exalted him
      and gave him the name
      that is above every name,
10 so that at the name of Jesus
      every knee should bend,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11 and every tongue should confess
      that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:5-11 NRSV)

Update – 5/3/2020

Dear TPC Family,

This week there has been conversation about bringing our “exile” to an end. I continue to be encouraged by the love and care that exudes from our congregation. I hear the reports of the work that our Deacons and our youth are doing, and to see God provide what we need to do the work we are called to do leaves me with a deep sense of gratitude and awe. This week we will take on the “So What?” question of Easter. Why did God do all of this. The answer can bring great joy to us. Join us as we celebrate.

This week again we have pre-recorded the service and put all of the parts together in a YouTube playlist that will allow you to enjoy the music and spoken word in the appropriate order. Here is the link: https://bit.ly/TPC_2020-05-03_Playlist. Click on the link at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 5, to join us in worship. There will be opportunities for you to sing along with hymns and, as always, join in the prayers as I lead us through this celebration of the risen Christ. A link to a PDF with the order of worship is available at https://bit.ly/TPC_2020-05-03_ServiceOrder. This will be followed by the celebration of communion which will include a time for our joys and concerns and the Lord’s Prayer. For this service, please have some form of juice/wine and some bread on hand so that as I lead us through the liturgy, each household can share the elements together. NOTE: Because the service is on YouTube, there may be advertisements that pop in, but you may skip them after a few seconds.)

COFFEE FELLOWSHIP – This week, at 10:30 a.m., we will again be hosting a Zoom coffee time. The link to join is https://us04web.zoom.us/j/71952653967?pwd=UFpieWJ3cU5sMzVwRTJ3THRERDFEdz09 or it can be found at the top of this page. Select the appropriate link to the Coffee Hour to get the required information to join in this time of fellowship.

After this is over, I encourage you to call the people that you did not see during the Zoom coffee time or someone who the Spirit may have brought to mind, just to keep that connection as well. If you do it with a cookie or cup of coffee in your hand, it will be almost as good as being there.

Last week, I mentioned that there are two ways to participate in our offering of our tithes and gifts. You can mail them to the church (225 W. Main St, Tustin, CA 92780) or you can go to the website and look for the green box at the bottom of the page that says “Give Now.” Thank you for all who are responding.

In these days as we look for encouragement, listen to these words from Hebrews. “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” (Hebrews 4:15‑16 NRSV)

Update – 4/25/2020

Dear TPC Family,

This week, as we live in this in-between time, we begin looking for clues that will help us find our way forward. We know that there will be an end to our “exile” but we don’t know how to get there. This week Jesus gives Peter the instruction he will need to remain faithful through the decades before him. This instruction will help us as we seek to remain faithful to our Lord. As we walk through these days, let us remind each other that the Risen Christ walks with us and keep our focus on him. Join us as we celebrate.

This week again we have pre-recorded the service and put all of the parts together in a YouTube playlist that will allow you to enjoy the music and spoken word in the appropriate order. Here is the link: https://bit.ly/TPC_2020-04-26_Playlist. Click on the link at 9:30 a.m on Sunday to join us in worship. After this is over, I encourage you to call the people that you did not see on the Zoom coffee time or someone who the Spirit may have brought to mind, just to keep that connection as well. If you do it with a cookie or cup of coffee in your hand, it will be almost as good as being there.

The great news of the Easter season is summed up in Paul’s beautiful words in Romans 5, “For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. Indeed, rarely will anyone die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person someone might actually dare to die. But God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us.” As we live in this love, let’s get ready to “Easter Like We Mean It!!!!”

Update – 4/18/2020

Dear TPC Family,

This week, as we live in the glow of Easter, we can begin to experience what the disciples felt. Jesus is risen, now what do we do? The disciples knew that the Good News would change the world, but what were they going to do with it? Living in between can be hard. We know that there will be an end to our “exile” but we don’t know when. As we walk through these days, let us remind each other that the Risen Christ walks with us through them. Join us as we celebrate.

This week we will again not stream via Facebook Live. Instead, we have pre-recorded the service and put all of the parts together in a YouTube play list that will allow you to enjoy the music and spoken word in the appropriate order.   Here is the link: https://bit.ly/TPC_2020-04-19_Playlist.   Click on the link at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday to join us in worship. There will be opportunities for you to sing along with hymns and, as always, join in the prayers as I lead us through this celebration of the risen Christ. A link to a PDF with the order of worship is available at https://bit.ly/TPC_2020-04-19_ServiceOrder. There are also links to the worship service recording and to the PDF with the order of worship at the top of this page. The great news of the Easter season is summed up in Paul’s beautiful words in Romans 8, “We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn within a large family.”

Update – 4/11/2020

Dear TPC Family,

Easter Sunday. It is fitting that this day comes at the end of what officials are saying will probably be the worst week of this pandemic in California (and maybe nationally). To walk with Jesus through the dark valley of rejection, torture and death. To grieve with His disciples as he lay in the tomb. Then to rejoice at the news that He is Risen, indeed. That is what this Sunday is all about. God triumphing over evil, hatred and the worst of humanity. Join us as we celebrate.

This week we will not stream via Facebook Live. Instead, we have pre-recorded the service and put all of the parts together in a YouTube playlist that will allow you to enjoy the music and spoken word in the appropriate order. Here is the link: https://bit.ly/TPC_2020-04-12_Playlist Click on the link at 9:30AM on Sunday to join us in worship. There will be opportunities for you sing to along with hymns and, as always, join in the prayers and affirmations as I lead us through this Easter celebration. An order of worship that you can use to follow along with the video recording is available at https://bit.ly/TPC_2020-04-12_ServiceOrder. There are also links to the worship service recording and to the PDF with the order of worship at the top of this page. NOTE: Because the service is on YouTube, there are two advertisements that pop in, but you may skip them after a few seconds.

COFFEE FELLOWSHIP – This week at 10:30 a.m., we will be hosting a Zoom coffee time. The link to join this is found at the top of this page. Select the appropriate link to the Easter Coffee Hour to get the required information to join in this time of fellowship.

The great news of Easter is summed up in Paul’s beautiful words in Romans 8, “in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Update – 4/9/2020

Dear TPC Family,

Maundy Thursday, April 9, is the day we celebrate the night that our Lord celebrated the Passover with His disciples. Each year we have a very moving service that walks us through that night, taking us to the cross with Jesus. We have recorded a version of that service, and Colin Stave has put together a wonderful service that you can access here at https://bit.ly/TPC_2020-04-09_Playlist or at the link above.  An order of worship that you can use to follow along with the video recording is available here at https://bit.ly/TPC_2020-04-09_ServiceOrder or at the link above. The service will include communion, so please have your grape juice/wine and bread handy as I lead us through the liturgy. Because we never end a worship service with Jesus in the tomb, there will be no benediction for this service either, so please join us on Easter Sunday for “The Rest of the Story.”

This week, on Easter Sunday, April 12, we will not stream via Facebook Live. Instead, we have pre-recorded the service and put all of the parts together in a YouTube playlist, like the one for Maundy Thursday, that will allow you to enjoy the music and spoken word in the appropriate order. There will be opportunities for you to sing along with hymns and, as always, join in the prayers and affirmations. The way you find the services is to click on the links above at 9:30 AM on Sunday. I will lead us through this Easter celebration. After the service, Emily Fuentes will be hosting a virtual Coffee Fellowship via Zoom. The link to the fellowship time is shown above as well.

Update – 4/4/2020

Dear TPC Family,

I pray this finds you well and ready to celebrate with us this week. Palm Sunday! It feels strange not to gather and join the parade as we start this Holy Week.

Once again, we are being asked to not gather physically for worship. Like last week, I want to invite you to gather with me online for worship. We will stream via Facebook Live from the sanctuary at 9:30 AM on Palm Sunday, April 5. (If you need help getting to Facebook Live, attached you will find a tutorial to help you access the Facebook Live feed.)  I will lead us in a Call to Worship and a prayer of confession. I will read a passage of Scripture and offer a sermon. This will be followed by the celebration of communion which will include a time for our joys and concerns and the Lord’s Prayer. For this service, please have some form of grape juice/wine and some bread on hand so that as I lead us through the liturgy, each household can share the elements together. (If you do not have any grape juice, use some other form of juice. We will celebrate again on Maundy Thursday.) After the stream is over, you can access it later on our website through the Facebook Live link on the Sermons Online page. (The Sermons Online page is available through the link on the homepage or through the Sermons link under the Latest News tab.)

During the service, I will mention that there are two ways to participating in our offering of our tithes and gifts. You can mail them to the church (225 W. Main St, Tustin, CA 92780) or you can go to the website and look for the green box at the bottom of the page that says, “Give Now.”

On Maundy Thursday, April 9, I invite you to come to the website and click on the link to the service we will have posted there. It will include communion, so please have your grape juice/wine and bread handy as I lead us through the liturgy.

Also attached is a PDF file with links to YouTube music that you can use to fill out the worship service. For those of you who are adept on your computer, you can have both files up and play the music and speaking parts in the order that they normally come in our regular service.

After worship is over, I encourage you to call the people that you normally talk with or someone who the Spirit may have brought to mind, just to keep that connection as well. If you do it with a cookie or cup of coffee in your hand, it will be just as good as being there.

Next week, Easter, we will have a link on this webpage to a full service, with the music integrated with liturgy. We will not be on Facebook Live. More information will come next week.

Because these are uncertain times for all of us, I urge you to live into Paul’s great words in Romans 8, “in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Because of Christ,

Update – 3/27/2020

Dear TPC Family,

As we wander through these wilderness-like days, I pray this finds you well.

Once again we are being asked to not gather physically for worship. Like last week, I want to invite you to gather with me online for worship. Once again, we will stream via Facebook Live from the sanctuary at 9:30AM on Sunday, March 29. (If you need help getting to Facebook Live, attached you will find a tutorial to help you access the Facebook Live feed.) I will lead us in a Call to Worship and a prayer of confession. I will read a passage of Scripture and offer a sermon. I will then lead us in a bidding prayer which allows each of us to offer our personal joys and concerns to God. This will be followed by the Lord’s Prayer. After the stream is over, you can access it later on our website through the Facebook Live link on the Sermons Online page. (The Sermons Online page is available through the link on the homepage or through the Sermons link under the Latest News tab.)

Update – 3/20/2020

Dear TPC Family,

I am sure you have been following the news around the response to the Corona Virus and know of the restrictions on public gatherings. Please know that just because we can not be physically present doesn’t mean that we are not connected. Because of Jesus, we have been made one family in Christ and it is that connection that can never be broken.

Since we are not allowed to gather physically for worship, I want to invite you to gather with me and each other online for worship. At 9:30 AM, we will stream via Facebook Live from the sanctuary. (If you need help getting to Facebook Live, attached you will find a tutorial to help you access the Facebook Live feed.) I will lead us in a Call to Worship and a prayer of confession. I will read a passage of Scripture and offer a sermon. I will then lead us in a bidding prayer, followed by the Lord’s Prayer. After the stream is over, you can access it later on our website through the Facebook Live link on the Sermons Online page. (The Sermons Online page is available through the link on the homepage or through the Sermons link under the Latest News tab.)

Also attached is a PDF file with links to YouTube music that you can use to fill out the worship service. For those of you who are adept on your computer, you can have both files up and play the music and speaking parts in the order that they normally come in our regular service.

After worship is over, I encourage you to call the people that you normally talk with, just to keep that connection as well. If you do it with a cookie or cup of coffee in your hand, it will be just as good as being there.

These are anxious times for all of us. But as Paul tells us in Romans, “in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers,  nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Because of Christ,

Update – 3/18/2020

Dear TPC Family

Since we will not be meeting for worship on Sundays, I would like to invite you to join us on Facebook Live at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, March 22 and 29. I will be leading those who join in prayer and offer a sermon. We hope to have some links on our website to appropriate music that you can play over your computer before and after the service. Attached you will find a tutorial to help you access the Facebook Live feed.

In addition to the virtual worship on Sunday, let also encourage you to take some time on Sunday to call people that you would normally talk with at church to check in with them. This will allow us to keep the personal bonds strong.

One other note, since we as a congregation want to do the right thing, we will continue to pay our staff during this time. Most of them will be working from home, but we have set up ways that you can contact the people you need by calling the church. This also means that we will need your continued financial support as we seek to meet our obligations to these special people who share their lives and gifts with us. Mail is one way to give as well as the online giving tab on our website.

I continue to be grateful for the wonderful family that God has brought together here at TPC. I look forward to having you join me via the internet on Sunday.
